Step-by-Step Guide for Accurate Sample Collection
Follow these steps to ensure reliable test results using aseptic techniques, gloves, and 3M sterile swabs.
1. Prepare for Sampling
✅ Wear clean gloves and gather sterile 3M swabs and the Chain of Custody (COC) form.
✅ Identify the food contact surface or environmental location to be swabbed.
2. Open the Swab Properly
✅ Tear open the sealed packaging carefully.
✅ Hold the handle—🚫 do not touch the sponge or the area below the finger stop.
3. Swabbing Process
🔹 Horizontal Stroke: Swab the surface once horizontally with firm, even pressure.
🔹 Vertical Stroke: Rotate the swab and swab once vertically on the same area.
4. Secure the Sample
✅ Return the swab to its sterile bag without touching unintended surfaces.
✅ Bend the handle from outside the bag to detach it—🚫 do not reach inside the bag.
✅ Seal the sample bag by folding and securing the wire tabs.
5. Complete the COC Form
✅ Record:
- Location, date, and time of sample collection.
- Area description (e.g., equipment name, zone).
- Signature in the “Relinquished By” section.
6. Transport the Sample
✅ Place the sealed sample bag in a cooler with ice packs.
✅ Include a paper copy of the COC form in the shipment box.
✅ Ship immediately to maintain sample integrity.
